The Amazon: The Green Heart of the Planet
The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering approximately 7.5 million km², which represents about 6% of the Earth's surface and 40% of the territory of Latin America and the Caribbean. This vast region spans nine countries, with Brazil holding the largest portion (around 60%), followed by Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
🌊 The Amazon River
The Amazon River, stretching 6,900 km, is the longest and most voluminous river in the world, discharging nearly 20% of the freshwater that flows into the oceans. Its basin includes over 1,000 tributaries and 25,000 km of navigable rivers.
🐾 Unmatched Biodiversity
The Amazon hosts an unparalleled biodiversity:
Over 40,000 plant species
Around 400 mammal species
Approximately 1,300 bird species
Thousands of insects and reptiles yet to be discovered
It is also home to more than 385 Indigenous peoples, who speak 86 languages and 650 dialects, many of whom live in voluntary isolation.
🌎 Ecological Importance
The Amazon plays a critical ecological role:
Acts as a global climate regulator, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide
Produces oxygen
Influences rainfall patterns across the continent
⚠️ Threats and Global Responsibility
Despite its importance, the Amazon faces growing threats such as:
Deforestation
Illegal mining
Climate change
Protecting the Amazon is not just a regional issue—it’s a global responsibility.
